Goa Beach & Heritage Break opens at the Basilica of Bom Jesus in Old Goa, the former capital of Portuguese India and a UNESCO World Heritage pilgrimage site. Construction of the basilica began in 1594 and it was consecrated in May 1605 by the archbishop Aleixo de Menezes; it holds the body of St Francis Xavier and takes its name, meaning "Good Jesus" in Portuguese, from the depiction of Christ known as Ecce Homo. Counted among the Seven Wonders of Portuguese Origin in the World, the church was formally elevated to the status of basilica by pontifical decree in 1946, and it went on to host the second National Eucharistic Congress, whose visitors included the Bishop of Dhaka.

From Old Goa the route runs to Fort Aguada, a 17th-century Portuguese fort built in 1612 on Sinquerim Beach overlooking the Arabian Sea, at the mouth of the Mandovi River. Built originally to guard against the Dutch and to serve as a reference point for ships arriving from Europe, the fort takes its name from the Portuguese word for "watery," after a freshwater spring inside its walls that once replenished passing vessels — at the time one of the largest freshwater storage facilities anywhere in Asia, with capacity for more than two million gallons. The Aguada Fort Lighthouse, added on a nearby hill in 1864, is the oldest lighthouse of its kind in Asia, and part of the fort complex later served as Goa's largest prison until 2015, when it was restored and reopened as a Freedom Struggle Museum commemorating those imprisoned there under Portuguese rule.

The trail continues to Anjuna, a coastal town in North Goa whose name is said by the historian Teresa Albuquerque to derive from the Arabic word for merchant guild, reflecting the area's long history as a trading stop. Anjuna became a stop on the hippie trail during the late 1960s and, in the following decades, gave rise to Goa trance, a subgenre of trance music that took its name from the town. Its flea market, held every Wednesday and Saturday since the same era, draws traders selling goods from across India and abroad, ranging from fruit and jewellery to clothing and handicrafts, while the beach itself sits within a longer stretch of coastline along Goa's Arabian Sea shore, with Chapora Fort visible in the distance.

The trip closes at Dudhsagar Falls, a four-tiered waterfall on the Mahadayi River set within the Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary and Mollem National Park in the Western Ghats. Rising 310 metres from the top of a crescent-shaped valley, the falls — whose name translates to "Sea of Milk" — rank among India's tallest, fed by the same river system that eventually reaches the Arabian Sea at Panaji as the Mandovi. Reached either by a jeep trail from the village of Kulem or along an eleven-kilometre stretch of railway track between Castle Rock and the Dudhsagar stop — a route now restricted by Indian Railways — the falls sit amid deciduous forest rich in biodiversity, a dramatic natural close to a route that has already carried the traveller through a saint's basilica, a Portuguese sea fort and a beach market with roots in the 1960s counterculture.
