Inside the Bali Beach + Ubud Wellness trip

Bali Beach + Ubud Wellness runs for 7 days across Bali, an Indonesian island and province recorded in ancient inscriptions under the Sanskrit-influenced name Vāli-dvīpa — dvīpa meaning "island" — with one of the earliest such records appearing on the Belanjong pillar inscription, dated to Saka year 835. Long before that, Austronesian peoples migrating from Taiwan through Maritime Southeast Asia had already settled the island around 2000 BC, and the first recorded European contact came only in 1512, when a Portuguese expedition under Antonio Abreu and Francisco Serrão sighted its northern shores. The itinerary works between two very different registers of the island: the rice-terrace and inland culture built up around Ubud, and the beach-club coastline further south and west.

The pack's rice terraces sit in Tegallalang, a district of Bali's Gianyar Regency roughly 10 kilometres north of Ubud, recorded at the 2010 census with an area of 61.80 square kilometres and a population of 50,625, since estimated at around 53,760. Tegallalang's terraced rice fields are themselves a recognised tourist attraction in the area, the reason the district appears on an itinerary otherwise built around Ubud and the coast, and one this trip pairs with time spent in Ubud itself, the town long regarded as Bali's cultural centre and a common base for visitors more interested in the island's arts and inland scenery than its beaches.

From Ubud the pack moves to Tanah Lot, a rock formation off Bali's coast in Beraban, in the Kediri district of Tabanan Regency, about 13 kilometres south of Tabanan and 20 kilometres north-west of Denpasar. The formation is home to Pura Tanah Lot — literally "Tanah Lot temple" — one of seven main Balinese "sea temples" strung along the island's south-western coast, dedicated to Dewa Baruna, or Bhatara Segara, the Balinese sea god. The site sits on an offshore rock reachable on foot only when the tide is low, a detail that ties the timing of any sunset visit directly to the sea itself, and a 2019 study found it to be among the most visited places in Indonesia, drawing an average of 500,000 tourists a year.

The coastal half of the trip centres on Seminyak, a mixed tourist and residential area on Bali's west coast immediately north of Kuta and Legian, originally a separate township before growing into another suburb of Kuta. Its position along that same stretch of coastline places it within the same beach corridor as its better-known southern neighbours, while remaining popular enough with resident expatriates that land and accommodation prices there rank among the highest anywhere on Bali.

The trip returns to Tegallalang for its closing days, the same Gianyar Regency district north of Ubud whose terraced rice fields already anchor the pack's inland stop. Framed against those same rice terraces, the swings set up across the district have become one more way visitors take in a landscape that Tegallalang's fields have been drawing tourists to see for years.
