VAT refunds are free money most tourists leave on the table. Country-by-country rates, minimum purchase amounts, and the fastest refund methods.
Every year, tourists in Europe leave billions in unclaimed VAT refunds. As a non-EU resident, you're entitled to a refund of the Value Added Tax on purchases you take home โ and in countries like France (20%), Italy (22%), and Sweden (25%), that's a significant chunk of change.
How VAT Refunds Work
The process is straightforward: buy goods at participating stores, get a tax-free form stamped at the store, present the form and goods at customs before departure, and collect your refund in cash or credit card. The actual refund is typically 10-18% (not the full VAT rate, as processing fees apply).
Country-by-Country Guide
- France โ 20% VAT, minimum purchase โฌ100.01, actual refund ~12%. Best for: luxury fashion, cosmetics, wine
- Italy โ 22% VAT, minimum purchase โฌ154.95, actual refund ~14.5%. Best for: leather goods, fashion, accessories
- UK โ 20% VAT, minimum purchase varies by retailer, actual refund ~16.7%. Best for: high-street fashion, department stores
- Germany โ 19% VAT, minimum purchase โฌ50, actual refund ~14.5%. Best for: electronics, automotive accessories, kitchen equipment
- Spain โ 21% VAT, minimum purchase โฌ90.16, actual refund ~13%. Best for: leather, ceramics, fashion
- Switzerland โ 7.7% VAT, minimum purchase CHF 300, actual refund ~5.5%. Low VAT but applicable on watches and luxury goods
Maximizing Your Refund
- Consolidate purchases at one store to exceed the minimum threshold
- Use Global Blue or Planet (the two major refund operators) โ their stores are marked with stickers
- Choose credit card refund over cash โ cash refunds at airports charge higher processing fees
- Keep goods unused and in original packaging until customs inspection
- Arrive at the airport 90 minutes early โ customs queues for tax-free stamps can be long during peak season
- Take photos of all receipts as backup โ paperwork occasionally gets lost
Common Mistakes
Don't pack tax-free goods in checked luggage before getting the customs stamp โ you need to show the goods. Don't forget to get the store-side tax-free form at the point of purchase โ you can't claim retroactively. Don't assume all stores participate โ look for the Global Blue or Planet Tax Free stickers.
On our Italy and France trip, we reclaimed โน42,000 in VAT refunds. It paid for our entire food budget for the trip. The 30 minutes at the airport customs desk was the best ROI of any time I've ever spent.
