Dubai's Gold Souk in Deira is the world's largest gold market. The key to saving: gold prices are based on the international gold rate (same everywhere), but the 'making charge' varies wildly between shops and is fully negotiable.
- Check the day's gold rate before visiting (Dubai Gold & Jewellery Group website)
- Making charges should be 8-15% for standard designs — never accept the first quoted price
- Compare at least 4-5 shops before buying. Prices can vary 20% for identical items
- Avoid shops near the souk entrance (tourist premium) — walk deeper for better deals
- 22K gold is the standard in Dubai; verify hallmarks and get a certificate of authenticity
- Average savings vs. India: 25-35% on gold jewellery (due to lower making charges and zero GST)
Electronics: Dubai Mall vs. Online
iPhones, laptops, and cameras are consistently 10-20% cheaper in Dubai than India, primarily due to lower VAT (5% vs. 18% GST) and competitive retail pricing. The Dubai Mall's Apple Store, Sharaf DG, and Virgin Megastore are the most reliable retailers.
Luxury Fashion
The Dubai Shopping Festival (December-January) and Dubai Summer Surprises (June-August) offer 30-75% discounts at luxury boutiques. Off-season, outlet malls like Dubai Outlet Mall and The Village offer year-round discounts on previous season collections.
