Why Yerevan works

Yerevan is older than Rome, its foundations at the Erebuni fortress dating to 782 BCE, though the city visible today was largely rebuilt in the Soviet era around a distinctive pink and yellow volcanic tuff stone that gives central Yerevan its warm, uniform colour palette. The city's defining view is Mount Ararat, Armenia's ancient spiritual symbol and the presumed resting place of Noah's Ark, visible on clear days across the closed border with Turkey, close enough to feel geographically part of Armenia despite lying just outside it. The Cascade, a giant tiered limestone stairway climbing a hillside north of the centre, doubles as an open-air modern art museum, its terraces and interior escalators lined with sculpture by Fernando Botero and other international artists, culminating in a rooftop view back across the city to Ararat. Republic Square, ringed by pink-tuff government buildings, hosts a nightly dancing fountain show set to music ranging from Armenian folk to classical. The Armenian Genocide Memorial at Tsitsernakaberd, with its eternal flame and needle-like memorial spire, is essential context for understanding modern Armenian identity. Yerevan's wine bars and brandy houses draw on one of the world's oldest continuous winemaking traditions — Armenia's Areni-1 cave complex holds the oldest known winery, dated to roughly 4100 BCE — making the city's natural wine scene one of its most distinctive draws.
