Yasawa Islands

A chain of volcanic islands strung north of Nadi, reachable only by catamaran or seaplane, ringed by reef so clear the sandbars appear to float. Blue Lagoon Beach, film-famous and postcard-real, anchors a string of small resorts with no roads, no towns and coral gardens a few strokes offshore.

Why Yasawa Islands works

The Yasawas are Fiji's outer-island answer to overdevelopment — thirteen inhabited volcanic islands strung roughly 60 kilometres northwest of Nadi, with no paved roads and, on most islands, one or two small resorts sharing a beach with a local village. Access is by the Yasawa Flyer catamaran, a daily south-to-north run that drops passengers directly onto beaches via tender, or by seaplane for the outer islands. Blue Lagoon Beach on Nacula Island, used as a filming location in the 1980 film of the same name, delivers on its title — a curve of white sand and gin-clear shallows framed by limestone outcrops — while Sawa-i-Lau's limestone caves, reached by boat and a short swim through a partly submerged chamber, add a genuinely singular half-day trip. Snorkelling straight off the beach is often better here than on organised reef tours elsewhere in Fiji, with soft coral gardens starting metres from shore. Village visits, arranged through resorts rather than independently, typically include a kava ceremony and a chance to see how the roughly 5,000 Yasawans who still call the islands home actually live, fishing and farming between tourist seasons. Power runs on generators, wifi is patchy by design, and that absence of infrastructure is precisely the islands' appeal.
