Why Yangon works

Yangon's skyline is dominated, day and night, by the Shwedagon Pagoda — a 99-metre gold-gilded stupa believed to enshrine relics of four Buddhas and covered in genuine gold leaf donated by devotees over centuries, its upper spire set with thousands of diamonds and gems. Illuminated at dusk, it draws a steady stream of pilgrims circling barefoot around its marble platform, and remains Myanmar's most important religious site regardless of who governs the country. Downtown Yangon holds one of Asia's largest concentrations of British colonial architecture, its former Secretariat, High Court and dozens of shuttered trading houses dating largely from the late 19th and early 20th centuries when Rangoon was Burma's colonial capital — many buildings stand weathered and unrestored, giving the district an atmospheric, time-capsule quality distinct from more polished colonial quarters elsewhere in Asia. Sule Pagoda, a smaller golden stupa marooned at the centre of a busy traffic roundabout, has anchored downtown Yangon since well before the modern street grid was drawn around it. Bogyoke Aung San Market trades in gems, lacquerware, longyi textiles and antiques across a 1926 colonial-era arcade. Given the significant political instability in Myanmar in recent years, travellers should check current government and airline advisories closely, confirm which regions remain accessible, and travel with a reputable local operator rather than independently.
