Warsaw

Warsaw was rebuilt brick by brick from wartime rubble using pre-war paintings as blueprints, and its reconstructed Old Town is now itself a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Add a Communist-era skyline and a fast-modernising centre, and Warsaw reads as Poland's most improbable comeback story.

Why Warsaw works

Roughly 85% of Warsaw was destroyed by German forces during and after the 1944 Uprising, in a deliberate campaign to erase the city. What followed was one of the most ambitious reconstructions in European history: architects used 18th-century paintings by Bernardo Bellotto, old photographs and surviving fragments to rebuild the Old Town's market square, façades and even individual decorative details brick by brick through the 1950s and 60s — a reconstruction so faithful that UNESCO listed it as a World Heritage Site in its own right, an unusual honour for a copy. The Royal Castle, seat of Polish kings until the partitions, was rebuilt to the same standard and now holds period interiors and a fine art collection. Warsaw's skyline carries a different layer of history in the Palace of Culture and Science, a 237-metre Stalinist "gift" from the Soviet Union in 1955 that Varsovians have alternately resented and reclaimed — its viewing deck now offers the best rooftop panorama in the city, ironically looking out over the glass towers that have since risen to rival it. The POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews and the Warsaw Rising Museum give the city's 20th century its full weight, while Łazienki Park's palace-on-the-water and free summer Chopin concerts offer a gentler counterpoint.
