Why Wahiba Sands works
Wahiba Sands, officially renamed Sharqiya Sands, stretches across roughly 10,000 square kilometres of Oman's eastern interior, its dunes shifting from pale gold near the coast to deep burnt orange further inland. Unlike more commercialised desert-camp circuits elsewhere in the Gulf, Wahiba retains a working Bedouin population — families here still herd camels and goats and maintain a semi-nomadic lifestyle, and many desert camps are run in partnership with local tribes rather than corporate operators. Dune-bashing by 4x4 and sandboarding are popular introductions, but the desert rewards slower travel: camel treks at dawn or dusk, when the light turns the sand the colour of embers, and overnight stays in open-sided majlis tents under skies with almost no light pollution. The desert's edge blends into Wadi Bani Khalid, a spring-fed canyon with turquoise pools popular for a swim after a dusty crossing. Sur, on the coast beyond the sands, makes a natural onward stop for dhow-building heritage. Wahiba Sands works best as a one- or two-night desert camp experience en route between Muscat and Sur, offering a genuinely lived-in Bedouin desert rather than a staged one.
