Hanoi

A thousand years of history compressed into a lakeside Old Quarter of narrow lanes, French colonial villas, and street-side pho stalls. Hanoi moves at the pace of its motorbikes — fast, dense, and endlessly absorbing.

Destination Guide

Why Hanoi works

Hanoi's Old Quarter, its 36 streets each historically named for the guild that once traded there, remains the city's beating heart — a tangle of narrow lanes where motorbikes weave past silk shops, pho stalls, and pavement barbers. Hoan Kiem Lake anchors the district, its red Huc Bridge leading to the small Ngoc Son Temple on an island in the water, and locals gather along its banks each morning for tai chi. The Temple of Literature, Vietnam's first national university founded in 1070, preserves a sequence of courtyards and stone stelae honouring doctoral graduates across centuries of imperial exams. French colonial architecture survives across the city in the Hanoi Opera House, St. Joseph's Cathedral, and the tree-lined boulevards of the French Quarter, where colonial-era villas now house embassies and boutique hotels. Train Street, where the railway runs within arm's reach of houses on either side, has become an unlikely but genuine slice of daily Hanoi life. Street food here is a legitimate reason to visit on its own — bun cha (grilled pork with noodles), banh mi, and egg coffee (ca phe trung) are all Hanoi inventions best eaten at a plastic stool on the pavement. The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and adjacent Presidential Palace complex offer a more formal counterpoint to the city's chaotic charm.
