Destination Guide

Why Ha Long Bay works

Ha Long Bay's name translates to Descending Dragon, tied to a legend of a dragon whose thrashing tail carved out the bay's valleys as it plunged into the sea, leaving behind the roughly 1,600 limestone and dolomite islands and islets that define the landscape today. An overnight cruise remains the classic way to experience the bay, with traditional wooden junk boats — now built to modern safety and comfort standards — threading between karsts as the sun sets and rises over still water. Hang Sung Sot (Surprise Cave), one of the bay's largest cave systems, holds cathedral-scale chambers of stalactites lit to dramatic effect. Kayaking through Luon Cave into a hidden lagoon enclosed by sheer rock walls, or paddling past the last floating fishing village at Vung Vieng, offers a quieter, closer encounter with the karst formations than a boat deck allows. Ti Top Island's short but steep climb rewards visitors with a panoramic viewpoint over the bay's most dramatic cluster of islets, an image that has come to represent Vietnam on countless postcards. Bai Tu Long Bay, a quieter, less-visited extension to the northeast, offers similar scenery with a fraction of the boat traffic for those seeking more solitude.
