Why Vientiane works

Vientiane feels less like a national capital than an oversized riverside town, and that unhurried scale is its main appeal. Set along the Mekong facing Thailand across the water, the city's streets mix Buddhist temples, French colonial shophouses and a handful of grand boulevards laid out during the colonial period but never fully built up. Each morning, saffron-robed monks walk quiet alms rounds through the older quarters, a tradition still genuinely observed rather than staged for visitors. That Luang, the gold-plated stupa believed to enshrine a relic of the Buddha, is Laos's most important national and religious monument, its stepped golden form appearing on the country's emblem. Wat Sisaket, one of the few temples to survive an 1828 Siamese invasion largely intact, houses thousands of small Buddha images in wall niches, while the riverside promenade fills each evening with a night market selling Lao textiles, silverwork and street food. The city's French heritage shows in its patisseries, baguette stalls and the wide, tree-lined Lane Xang Avenue leading to Patuxai, Vientiane's own triumphal arch, built partly from cement donated for an airport runway. Vientiane rarely serves as more than a one-to-two night stop before travellers move north to Luang Prabang or south along the Mekong, but its unforced pace makes it a good place to adjust to Laos's rhythm.
