Why Varadero works
Varadero occupies the Hicacos Peninsula, a slender finger of land jutting into the Straits of Florida where the sand runs pale and fine for roughly twenty kilometres — among the longest continuous beaches in the Caribbean. Cuba's tourism authority developed the peninsula almost entirely around all-inclusive resorts, so while it lacks Havana's street-level texture, it delivers on the specific promise of warm, calm, turquoise water and dependable sun, particularly along the eastern stretch near the marina. The town centre retains a few pre-revolutionary mansions, including the Xanadu House, a 1930s estate built by the Du Pont family that now houses a restaurant and golf clubhouse on Cuba's only championship course. Watersports operators run catamaran trips to nearby cays, snorkelling excursions over coral patches, and deep-sea fishing charters chasing marlin in the Gulf Stream. Varadero's calm, shallow shelf makes it especially manageable for families and less confident swimmers compared with more exposed Caribbean beaches, and sunset over the Bay of Cardenas from the peninsula's western tip draws a steady evening crowd. Most visitors base here purely for the beach, treating a day trip to Havana — roughly two hours by road — as an optional cultural excursion rather than the main event. The peninsula's tourist-zone status means fewer of the supply shortages that affect the rest of the island, though it also means a more curated, resort-bubble experience than Cuba elsewhere.
