Why Ulu Temburong National Park works

Ulu Temburong National Park protects a remote stretch of Borneo's primary rainforest in Brunei's isolated Temburong district, separated from the rest of the country by a strip of Malaysian territory and reachable only by a scenic longboat journey upriver, weaving between limestone outcrops and overhanging jungle canopy. Because access has always been deliberately limited — no roads penetrate the park's interior — Ulu Temburong preserves some of the least disturbed rainforest anywhere in Borneo, a fact reflected in its local nickname, the Green Jewel of Brunei. The park's signature experience is its aluminium canopy walkway, a series of connected towers rising up to 50 metres above the forest floor, offering a rare above-canopy vantage point across an unbroken expanse of rainforest to distant hills, with the best wildlife activity and mist visible at dawn. Below the canopy, jungle trails lead past waterfalls and swimming holes, while guides point out the forest's exceptional biodiversity — hornbills, proboscis monkeys, gibbons and an estimated several hundred bird species, alongside carnivorous pitcher plants found along some of the higher trails. A network of suspension bridges and boardwalks makes much of the park accessible without technical trekking experience, though the humidity and heat make an early start essential. Ulu Temburong is typically visited as a full-day trip from Bandar Seri Begawan, combining the river journey, canopy walkway and jungle trekking into one of Southeast Asia's most rewarding single-day rainforest experiences.
