Why Trakai works
Trakai Island Castle sits entirely surrounded by Lake Galvė, connected to the mainland by a wooden footbridge, and its red-brick Gothic towers and crenellated walls make it the single most photographed building in Lithuania — deservedly, given the sight of it rising directly from still water is genuinely striking, whether under summer sun or the pink light of a Baltic sunset. Built in the 14th century as Lithuania's political and military centre under Grand Duke Vytautas, the castle fell into ruin after Napoleonic and earlier wars and stood roofless for centuries before a controversial but thorough Soviet-era restoration through the 1950s-60s rebuilt it close to its medieval form, complete with a museum of period arms, coins and Grand Duchy history inside. Trakai is also home to Lithuania's Karaim community, a Turkic ethnic and religious minority brought here by Vytautas in the 14th century as royal guards, whose distinctive wooden houses — recognisable by three street-facing windows, one for God, one for the Grand Duke, one for the family — still stand along the main street. The Karaim's signature dish, kibinai, a crescent-shaped pastry filled with spiced mutton, is sold at cafés throughout the town and makes an essential stop alongside the castle. Boat rentals on the lake offer a different angle on the fortress entirely.
