Torres del Paine

Three granite spires rise sheer above turquoise glacial lakes in Chilean Patagonia, ringed by hanging glaciers and windswept steppe. The multi-day 'W' trek is the classic route, but even a single viewpoint hike delivers one of South America's most dramatic skylines.

Why Torres del Paine works

Torres del Paine National Park sits at the southern tip of the Andes, where the range breaks apart into granite towers that look less like mountains than architecture. The three namesake Torres — sheer granite needles over 2,600 metres — reflect in Laguna Torres after a steep final climb that rewards hikers with the park's signature view. The Cuernos del Paine, horn-shaped peaks striped with dark sedimentary rock atop pale granite, dominate the more accessible French Valley route, while the Grey Glacier calves icebergs into a lake the colour of milky turquoise. Guanacos graze the steppe in herds, condors ride the near-constant Patagonian wind, and pumas — increasingly visible to patient trackers — hunt across the park's lower valleys. The full W trek takes four to five days between refugios and campsites, but day visitors based in Puerto Natales can still reach the main miradors on guided excursions. Weather changes without warning here: brilliant sun can turn to horizontal sleet within the hour, and the wind alone has been clocked over 100 km/h on exposed ridges. Estancia stays nearby offer a gentler Patagonian pace, with lamb asado dinners and horseback rides across the same steppe the wildlife calls home.
