Why Chiang Rai works
Chiang Rai trades the crowds of Chiang Mai for a quieter, more contemplative pace, anchored by contemporary temple art that draws visitors from across the country. Wat Rong Khun, the White Temple, is artist Chalermchai Kositpipat's ongoing masterwork — an ornate white-and-mirror structure symbolising purity, with a surreal approach bridge lined with reaching hands representing worldly desire. Wat Rong Suea Ten, the Blue Temple, offers a striking contrast with indigo walls, gold accents, and a luminous white Buddha at its centre. The city's golden clock tower, also designed by Kositpipat, marks the hour with a light-and-sound show each evening at the heart of downtown. A short drive north brings you to the Golden Triangle, the historic opium-trading confluence of the Ruak and Mekong rivers where Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos converge — the Hall of Opium museum here traces the region's complicated history. Doi Mae Salong's hillside tea plantations, settled by Kuomintang soldiers who fled China in the 1950s, produce some of Thailand's best oolong and offer cooler-climate hiking with views into Myanmar.
