Chiang Mai

Northern Thailand's cultural capital wraps a moated old city of gilded temples inside a valley ringed by misty mountains. Wat Phra Singh's golden chedi, riotous night bazaars, and a slower highland pace set it apart from the south.

Why Chiang Mai works

Chiang Mai's Old City, still bounded by remnants of its 13th-century walls and moat, holds more than thirty temples within a compact, walkable grid. Wat Phra Singh houses one of Thailand's most revered Buddha images and exemplifies classic Lanna architecture, its multi-tiered roofs and gold-leafed chedi glowing at dusk. Wat Chedi Luang's massive ruined stupa, partially toppled by a 16th-century earthquake, remains one of the city's most atmospheric sites. Just outside town, a winding road climbs Doi Suthep mountain to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, where 306 naga-flanked steps lead to a golden chedi said to house a relic of the Buddha, with the entire Chiang Mai valley spread out below. The Sunday Walking Street market transforms Ratchadamnoen Road into a mile of handicrafts, hill-tribe textiles, and khao soi noodle stalls. Beyond the old city, Chiang Mai is a base for ethical elephant sanctuaries, Doi Inthanon National Park (Thailand's highest peak), and the emerging cafe culture of the Nimmanhaemin district, where converted teak houses serve specialty coffee alongside contemporary Thai design shops.
