Taif

Destination Guide

Why Taif works

Taif has served as a mountain retreat from the Hejaz heat for centuries, its elevation above 1,800 metres giving it a noticeably cooler, greener character than Mecca and Jeddah below. The city is best known for its rose harvest — terraced farms across the surrounding hills grow Rosa damascena, the source of prized Taif rose oil, distilled each spring (typically March to April) into attar perfume sold across the kingdom and exported internationally; small family distilleries around the city welcome visitors during harvest season to watch the traditional copper-still process. Al Rudaf Park and the Shubra Palace, an Ottoman-era summer residence with elaborately carved wooden balconies, reflect Taif's long history as a seasonal escape for regional elites. The Al-Hada mountain road, a dramatic switchback route connecting Taif to the coast, offers viewpoints over the escarpment and, at its higher reaches, a cable car crossing the cliff face. Souq Okaz, revived as an annual cultural festival, references the pre-Islamic poetry market once held nearby, one of Arabia's oldest recorded trading and literary gatherings. Taif's pomegranate and grape orchards, watered by mountain springs, supply much of the region's fresh produce. As a cooler, rose-scented counterpoint to the Hejaz coast, Taif rewards a one- or two-night stop, particularly during the spring harvest.
