Sydney

Australia's harbour city needs little introduction — the Opera House's sail-like shells, the Harbour Bridge climb and beaches like Bondi within city limits make Sydney one of the world's most naturally spectacular urban settings.

Why Sydney works

Sydney Opera House, its sail-shaped shells designed by Danish architect Jorn Utzon and completed in 1973 after a construction saga spanning 14 years and cost overruns of over 1000%, remains one of the 20th century's defining buildings and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, hosting opera, ballet and concerts within acoustically renowned halls. The adjacent Sydney Harbour Bridge, nicknamed 'the Coathanger' for its arched steel silhouette, can be crossed on foot for free or climbed via a guided BridgeClimb to a summit 134m above the harbour, offering a panorama over the Opera House, botanical gardens and the harbour's countless coves. Bondi Beach, a short bus ride from the city centre, delivers genuine surf-city energy within Sydney's municipal boundaries, its golden crescent backed by an oceanside path — the Bondi to Coogee coastal walk — that passes cliffside pools and rocky headlands over 6km. The Royal Botanic Garden, wrapping around the harbour beside the Opera House, offers free harbour views away from the crowds, while Darling Harbour's aquarium and museums cater to families. Sydney's food scene draws heavily on its Pacific Rim position and multicultural population, particularly its exceptional seafood at the Sydney Fish Market and modern Australian fine dining. Ferries remain one of the best-value ways to see the harbour, with the Manly route crossing open water past the Heads to a laid-back beach suburb.
