Stockholm

Built across fourteen islands, Stockholm pairs a medieval Gamla Stan of narrow lanes and a royal palace with a design-forward, waterfront modern city. Ferries, not taxis, are often the fastest way between neighbourhoods in Scandinavia's most elegant capital.

Why Stockholm works

Stockholm spreads across fourteen islands where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic, and Gamla Stan — the medieval Old Town — remains its dense, cobbled heart, its narrow lanes barely wide enough for two people to pass, ringed by ochre and mustard-coloured merchant houses. The Royal Palace, one of Europe's largest still in active royal use, holds over 600 rooms and a daily Changing of the Guard that draws crowds even in a city not given to excessive pageantry. Riddarholmen Church, the burial place of Swedish monarchs since the 13th century, rises on its own small island just west of Gamla Stan, its cast-iron spire a distinctive silhouette against the water. Stockholm City Hall, home to the Nobel Prize banquet every December, is a Romantic National-style landmark best seen from the water at sunset, when its brick tower and golden Three Crowns spire catch the light. The Vasa Museum houses a nearly fully intact 17th-century warship that sank on its maiden voyage in Stockholm harbour and was raised 333 years later — one of the best-preserved ships of its era anywhere in the world. Södermalm, the city's hippest island, trades royal history for design boutiques, coffee roasters and the best sunset views back across the water toward the old town.
