Sigiriya

A 200-metre volcanic rock rises abruptly from the jungle, crowned by the ruins of a 5th-century royal palace and guarded by frescoed galleries and a pair of giant carved lion paws — Sri Lanka's most extraordinary single sight.

Why Sigiriya works

Sigiriya, often called the Eighth Wonder of the Ancient World, is the ruined palace-fortress of King Kashyapa, who in the 5th century AD chose this sheer volcanic outcrop as the site for an extraordinary royal capital, engineering water gardens, boulder gardens, and a palace complex at its summit that remain remarkably intact after fifteen centuries. The ascent begins through symmetrical water gardens fed by an ingenious hydraulic system still functional today, before climbing past the Mirror Wall — once polished enough to reflect the king's image, now covered in centuries of visitor graffiti-poetry dating back to the 8th century — and the famous Sigiriya frescoes, a gallery of bare-breasted maidens painted in mineral pigments that has survived in a sheltered rock pocket for over a thousand years. The final approach to the summit passes between two massive carved lion paws, all that remains of what was once a colossal lion's head gateway that gave the site its name (Sinhagiri, Lion Rock). At the top, the foundations of Kashyapa's palace spread across the flattened summit, with a small pool cut into the rock and panoramic views across the surrounding jungle and the cultural triangle's flat plains stretching toward Dambulla and Polonnaruwa. Pidurangala Rock, a short distance away, offers a less crowded alternative climb with arguably the best view of Sigiriya itself, particularly at sunrise.
