Why Galle works
Galle's fortified old town, built by the Portuguese and substantially expanded by the Dutch East India Company from 1663 onward, remains one of the best-preserved examples of a European fortified city built in South Asia, its ramparts still enclosing a living neighbourhood rather than a museum piece. The Galle Lighthouse, at the fort's southeastern tip, marks the point where the ramparts meet the open Indian Ocean, and the walk along the sea walls at sunset — past cannons, colonial-era churches, and the old Dutch Reformed Church — remains the essential Galle experience. Inside the fort walls, narrow streets lined with Dutch colonial villas now house boutique hotels, art galleries, and cafes, a gentrification that has kept the district both liveable and increasingly polished over the past two decades. The Maritime Archaeology Museum, housed in a former Dutch warehouse, traces Galle's centuries as a key trading port on routes connecting Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Just outside the fort, Galle's fish market and the busy Main Street offer a livelier, more local counterpoint to the tourist-oriented interior. The surrounding coastline extends into Unawatuna's crescent beach and the stilt fishermen of Koggala, both easy half-day trips that pair naturally with a Galle base, while the fort itself, particularly at dawn before the tour groups arrive, remains one of Sri Lanka's most atmospheric places to simply walk.
