Destination Guide

Why Ella works

Ella sits at a cooler elevation in Sri Lanka's central highlands, a former British colonial retreat now popular for its manageable hikes, tea-country views, and slower pace after the temple circuits of the cultural triangle. The Nine Arch Bridge, a colonial-era railway viaduct built entirely of stone, brick, and cement without any structural steel, spans a lush valley of tea bushes and has become one of Sri Lanka's most photographed landmarks, especially when a blue train crosses at one of its scheduled times each day. Little Adam's Peak offers a relatively easy hour-long climb rewarded with panoramic views over the valley and, on clear days, distant sightings of the true Adam's Peak far to the south. Ella Rock, a longer and steeper trek through tea plantations and forest, delivers an even wider vista over the surrounding hill country. The train journey between Kandy and Ella, threading through tunnels and along cliffside track past terraced tea gardens, is frequently ranked among the world's most scenic rail routes, with the stretch approaching Ella particularly dramatic. Ravana Falls, a wide cascading waterfall a short tuk-tuk ride from town, ties into local Ramayana legend and offers a pleasant stop for swimming in the pools below. Numerous small tea factories around Ella welcome visitors for tours explaining the plucking, withering, and rolling process behind Ceylon tea.
