Why Colombo works

Colombo rarely tops itineraries on its own, but as the country's largest city and main international gateway, it rewards a day or two spent exploring its layered colonial and contemporary character. Galle Face Green, a long oceanfront promenade laid out by the British in the 19th century, remains the city's social heart, filling each evening with families, kite-flyers, and street-food carts selling isso wade (prawn fritters) and kottu roti as the sun sets over the Indian Ocean. The Dutch-era Wolvendaal Church and the old Dutch Hospital, now converted into restaurants and boutiques, trace Colombo's earlier colonial history back before British rule. Gangaramaya Temple, an eclectic Buddhist complex blending Sri Lankan, Thai, Indian, and Chinese architectural influences, sits beside the artificial Beira Lake in the city centre. Pettah, Colombo's old bazaar quarter, is a dense, chaotic grid of specialist markets — spice, textile, hardware — that offers the most vivid slice of everyday commerce in the city. The Colombo Lotus Tower, South Asia's tallest self-supported structure, has become the newest addition to the skyline, illuminated in changing colours each night and visible across much of the city. Colombo's dining scene has grown considerably in recent years, with rooftop bars and fine-dining restaurants increasingly setting the city apart from a purely transit-stop reputation.
