Why Southeast Asia Cruise works
A Southeast Asia cruise typically calls at ports across four countries bordering the region's central sea lanes: Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam. Singapore, an island country of more than 60 islands sitting about one degree of latitude north of the equator off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, has long served as a maritime crossroads, growing from a nineteenth-century British trading post into a modern hub. Malaysia, a federal constitutional monarchy of 13 states and three federal territories, is split by the South China Sea into Peninsular Malaysia on the Southeast Asian mainland and East Malaysia on the island of Borneo, and shares maritime borders with Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia. Thailand, formerly known as Siam, borders Malaysia to the south and reaches the sea along the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea, while Vietnam sits at the eastern edge of mainland Southeast Asia along the Gulf of Thailand and the South China Sea, bordered by China, Laos, and Cambodia.
Peninsular Malaysia shares land and maritime borders with Thailand as well as maritime borders with Singapore, Vietnam, and Indonesia, and the Strait of Malacca, lying between Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula, forms one of the key waterways linking these itinerary stops; Singapore itself is separated from the Malay mainland by the Straits of Johor, connected by causeway and bridge. Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia's national capital and largest city, sits within a country covering 330,803 square kilometres and home to more than 34 million people, making it the world's 43rd-most populous country.
Thailand's geography runs from the mountainous Thai highlands in the north, capped by Doi Inthanon at 2,565 metres, through the Khorat Plateau of the northeast bordered by the Mekong River, to the flat Chao Phraya River valley at the centre of the country that drains into the Gulf of Thailand near Bangkok, the capital and largest city of a country covering approximately 513,115 square kilometres and home to nearly 66 million people. Southern Thailand narrows into the Kra Isthmus before widening into the Malay Peninsula, giving cruise itineraries through this stretch of coastline access to both the mainland's river-fed lowlands and the peninsula's narrower southern reach.
Vietnam, covering about 331,210 square kilometres with a coastline 3,444 kilometres long, narrows to as little as 50 kilometres across at its waist in Quảng Bình province before widening to around 600 kilometres in the north; the country is mostly hilly and densely forested, with mountains covering 40 percent of its land area and level land no more than 20 percent, and the Red River flows past Hanoi, the capital, before emptying into the Gulf of Tonkin across the Red River Delta, a flat plain covering 15,000 square kilometres. Ho Chi Minh City, in the south, is the country's largest city and a common cruise port for the southern leg of a Vietnam itinerary, some 331,000 square kilometres and 102 million people removed from the delta landscape of the north.
Each of the four countries brings a different maritime history to a Southeast Asia cruise: Singapore's rise as a British entrepôt from 1819, Malaysia's position as the only country with territory on both the Asian mainland and the Malay Archipelago, Thailand's status as the region's sole country never formally colonised by a European power, and Vietnam's long coastline shaped by both Chinese rule from 111 BC and later French colonial contact. Archaeological evidence places human habitation in Thailand back at least 40,000 years and in Vietnam from the Paleolithic age, giving the region's port cities a depth of history that predates the shipping lanes a modern cruise now follows between them.
