Why South Luangwa National Park works

South Luangwa National Park is where the walking safari was pioneered in the 1950s by conservationist Norman Carr, and it remains the discipline's spiritual home: guided walks led by armed, rigorously trained scouts move at a fraction of vehicle speed, reading tracks, dung and alarm calls to build a far more intimate understanding of the bush than a game drive alone can offer. The Luangwa River, which meanders through the park leaving oxbow lagoons in its wake as it shifts course year to year, supports one of Africa's densest hippo populations along with some of the continent's best leopard sightings after dark, when spotlit night drives -- permitted here in a way few other parks allow -- regularly turn up this notoriously elusive cat hunting or moving through camp surrounds. Elephant, buffalo, giraffe (the endemic Thornicroft's subspecies, found only in this valley) and enormous herds of puku antelope round out a wildlife list that rivals better-known parks with a fraction of the visitor numbers. South Luangwa's camps range from simple, walking-safari-focused bush camps to a handful of more comfortable riverside lodges, many of them owner-run and staffed by guides with decades of experience in the valley. The dry season, roughly June to October, concentrates game tightly along the river and is also when walking safaris run most reliably, while the November-to-April wet season floods much of the park and closes many camps, turning the valley over to birdlife and dramatic storm-lit skies instead.
