Busan

South Korea's largest port city pairs Haeundae Beach's high-rise skyline with the cliffside temple of Haedong Yonggungsa and the rainbow-painted alleys of Gamcheon Culture Village, a former hillside slum reborn as an open-air art installation.

Destination Guide

Why Busan works

Busan's identity is shaped by its geography — a major port city wrapped around mountains and coastline, giving it a more relaxed, beach-oriented character than the density of Seoul. Haeundae Beach, backed by a wall of high-rise hotels, is the city's most famous stretch of sand and the summer gathering point for both locals and visitors, with the Busan International Film Festival adding a cultural anchor each October. Haedong Yonggungsa, a Buddhist temple built directly onto rocks at the ocean's edge rather than the mountain settings typical of most Korean temples, offers a genuinely striking combination of crashing waves and traditional multi-tiered pagoda architecture. Gamcheon Culture Village, once one of Busan's poorest hillside slums, was transformed in the late 2000s through a government-backed community art project into a maze of brightly painted houses, murals, and small galleries that has become one of the city's most photographed neighbourhoods. Jagalchi Market, Korea's largest seafood market, sells live catch straight off fishing boats along the harbour, with upstairs restaurants preparing your selection immediately for lunch. The Gwangan Bridge, illuminated nightly in changing colours, spans Gwangalli Beach and forms the backdrop for one of Korea's most striking urban night views, best appreciated from one of the beachfront cafes or rooftop bars along the sand.
