Why Bratislava works
Bratislava Castle's four white towers sit on a hill directly above the Danube, visible from most of the old town below and giving, in return, one of the best river panoramas in Central Europe from its ramparts — on a clear day the view stretches into Austria and Hungary, a reminder that Bratislava is the only national capital bordering two other countries. The old town itself is compact enough to walk in an afternoon: St Martin's Cathedral, where Hungarian kings and queens were once crowned, sits near the castle hill, while Michael's Gate, the last surviving medieval city gate, opens onto pedestrianised streets lined with pastel Baroque and Rococo facades. Bratislava's playful side shows in its street sculptures — a bronze figure known as Čumil ("the Watcher") peers up from a manhole cover, a favourite photo stop that has become an unofficial city mascot. The Slovak National Theatre's neo-Renaissance building anchors a fountain-lined square just off the main pedestrian route. Across the river, the UFO Observation Deck, perched atop a bridge pylon, gives a striking modern counterpoint to the old town's spires. Bratislava's proximity to Vienna, just an hour away by train, has made it an easy add-on to Central European itineraries, though its own old town, wine bars, and riverside promenade reward a stay in their own right.
