Why Simien Mountains works

The Simien Mountains erupt from the Ethiopian highlands in a jagged wall of basalt pinnacles and sheer escarpments that drop over a thousand metres into the valleys below, earning UNESCO World Heritage status for both scenery and biodiversity found nowhere else on Earth. The star residents are gelada "bleeding-heart" baboons -- not true baboons but the last surviving grass-grazing primates -- who move in troops of hundreds along the cliff-top meadows, entirely unbothered by hikers walking within a few metres. Walia ibex, a rare wild goat found only here, cling to near-vertical rock faces, while lammergeier vultures ride thermals along the escarpment edge. Trekking is the park's reason for being: day hikes from Debark or Sankaber reach dramatic viewpoints like Jinbar waterfall and Chennek, while multi-day treks push toward Ras Dashen, Ethiopia's highest peak at 4,550 metres, staying in community-run camps and simple lodges along the way. Scout guides (mandatory, armed as a formality rather than for actual danger) accompany all treks and often prove excellent spotters for wildlife. Weather shifts fast at altitude -- brilliant sun, sudden mist, cold nights -- so layered clothing matters more than technical gear for most routes.
