Sigulda

Known as "Latvia's Switzerland," Sigulda sits in the forested Gauja River valley beneath the red-brick towers of Turaida Castle, a medieval fortress rebuilt to its 13th-century form. Zip lines, sandstone caves and autumn foliage make it an easy day trip from Riga.

Why Sigulda works

Sigulda sits an hour from Riga in the Gauja National Park, Latvia's largest protected area, where the Gauja River has carved a valley deep and forested enough to have earned the town its nickname, "the Switzerland of Latvia" — a slight exaggeration, but the autumn foliage here, when the valley's dense forest turns amber and red, is genuinely spectacular. Turaida Castle, rebuilt from ruins through the 20th century to approximate its original 1214 form, stands on a hill above the valley in distinctive red brick, its tower open for climbing and its museum reserve telling the story of the Liv people who settled the region before German crusaders arrived. Nearby, Sigulda's own medieval castle ruins and the neighbouring 19th-century New Castle sit within walking distance, alongside the Gutmanis Cave, the largest visible cave in the Baltics, its sandstone walls carved with centuries of inscriptions and initials, some dating back hundreds of years. The valley is also Latvia's adventure-sports hub — a bobsleigh track built for the 1986 European Championship still runs public rides, cable cars cross the gorge, and one of Europe's longest zip lines lets you fly directly over the river. Sigulda makes an easy, scenic half-day or full-day trip from Riga by train.
