Why Novi Sad works

Novi Sad sits across the Danube from Petrovaradin Fortress, an 18th-century Austrian stronghold so extensive it's nicknamed "Gibraltar on the Danube" for the scale of its underground tunnel network, said to run over 16 kilometres beneath the hill. Above ground, the fortress's off-kilter clock tower — its hour and minute hands deliberately swapped in size so river boat captains could read the time from a distance — has become the city's best-known landmark, framed against the Danube from countless viewpoints along the ramparts. The old town below is compact and easy to walk: Liberty Square holds the neo-Gothic Name of Mary Church, its glazed tile roof a smaller, more colourful echo of Vienna's St Stephen's, while the Bishop's Palace on the same square adds a grand Habsburg-era facade. Zmaj Jovina, the main pedestrian street, runs between the square and the Danube promenade past cafes that spill onto the pavement through summer. Every July, Petrovaradin Fortress hosts EXIT Festival, one of Europe's largest music festivals, drawing several hundred thousand visitors to stages built directly into the fortress's bastions and moats. Outside festival season, the same grounds return to a quieter rhythm of local families walking the ramparts at sunset, with views stretching over the flat Vojvodina plain beyond the river.
