Why San Blas Islands works
The San Blas Islands, known to the Guna people as Guna Yala, form an archipelago of roughly 365 islands and cays strung along Panama's Caribbean coast, most of them uninhabited sandbars barely large enough for a cluster of palm trees. The Guna have governed the territory autonomously since a 1925 revolution against Panamanian authority, maintaining their own political structure, language, and the distinctive mola textile art — reverse-appliqué panels of geometric and animal designs — sold by women in traditional dress on almost every inhabited island. Access is deliberately basic: a bumpy drive or short flight from Panama City reaches the coast, followed by a boat transfer to simple thatched-roof cabanas, most without reliable electricity or wifi, run by Guna families rather than international hotel chains. The appeal is precisely this lack of development — days here consist of island-hopping between different tiny cays, snorkelling over healthy reef systems relatively undamaged by mass tourism, and eating whatever the day's catch happens to be, usually lobster or red snapper grilled with coconut rice. Some islands host only a handful of huts and a single family; others are day-trip stops with nothing but sand and palm shade. The Guna's careful control over tourism development — foreign ownership of land is prohibited — has kept San Blas markedly less commercialised than comparable Caribbean archipelagos, though it also means infrastructure and payment options (cash only, US dollars) require more advance planning than a typical resort trip.
