Why Samarkand works

Samarkand was the capital of Timur's 14th-century empire, and Registan Square remains the clearest statement of that ambition: three madrasas — Ulugh Beg, Sher-Dor and Tilya-Kori — face each other across a vast plaza, their facades a continuous field of turquoise, cobalt and gold tilework that photographs differently at every hour of daylight and glows under evening illumination. A short walk away, the Gur-e-Amir mausoleum holds Timur's own tomb beneath a fluted azure dome, its interior gilded ceiling among the finest surviving examples of Timurid decorative art. The Shah-i-Zinda necropolis, a street of tiled mausoleums climbing a hillside, is quieter and arguably more atmospheric than Registan, each tomb a distinct experiment in geometric and floral tilework built up over five centuries. Samarkand's Siab Bazaar sells the region's famous non bread, stamped with intricate patterns and baked in tandoor ovens visible from the street, alongside dried fruit, spices and the region's flat, sweet melons. The Ulugh Beg Observatory, built by Timur's astronomer grandson, held one of the medieval world's most accurate stellar catalogues before its ruins were rediscovered in 1908. Samarkand rewards two full days minimum — Registan alone deserves both a daytime and a dusk visit.
