Why Riyadh & Diriyah works

Riyadh pairs an increasingly vertical modern skyline — the Kingdom Centre Tower's sky bridge and the King Abdullah Financial District among the newest additions — with, just outside the city, one of the Arabian Peninsula's most significant historical sites. Diriyah's At-Turaif district, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the birthplace of the first Saudi state, its mudbrick Najdi-style palaces and mosques restored along the Wadi Hanifa valley, now home to museums, heritage walks and some of Riyadh's most talked-about new restaurants overlooking the ruins at dusk. The National Museum of Saudi Arabia, in Riyadh proper, traces the peninsula's history from pre-Islamic civilisations through the kingdom's founding with an ambitious, well-curated exhibition sequence. Al Masmak Fortress, the clay-and-mudbrick fort central to the 1902 recapture of Riyadh by Ibn Saud, sits at the edge of the old souq district, Souq Al Zal, still trading antiques, textiles and Bedouin crafts. Edge of the World (Jebel Fihrayn), a dramatic cliff escarpment roughly 90 minutes from the city, has become a popular sunset excursion for hiking and camping. Riyadh's rapid restaurant and cultural-district growth, paired with Diriyah's heritage anchor, makes the pairing Saudi Arabia's most complete capital-region itinerary.
