Why Port Moresby works
Port Moresby serves mainly as PNG's international gateway rather than a destination in its own right, but a day or two here rewards curiosity. The Papua New Guinea National Museum and Art Gallery holds one of the Pacific's best collections of Sepik River carvings, Highlands bilas (ceremonial dress) and outrigger canoe prows, offering a compressed introduction to the country's roughly 800 distinct language groups before heading further afield. Hanuabada, a Motuan village built entirely on stilts over Fairfax Harbour just north of downtown, has stood in some form since before European contact and remains an inhabited fishing community rather than a museum piece — best visited respectfully and, ideally, with a local guide. Ela Beach's seafront promenade, PNG's original town beach, gives an easy waterfront walk past the National Parliament's traditional haus tambaran-inspired facade. Paga Hill and Touaguba Hill offer harbour viewpoints over the container port and the fortified colonial-era gun emplacements from the Second World War, when Port Moresby was a critical Allied base during the Kokoda campaign. Security has historically been a concern for independent travellers, and most visitors move through with a guide or as part of an organised itinerary connecting onward to the Highlands, Milne Bay's dive sites, or the Kokoda Track. It is not a lingering city, but the museum and Hanuabada alone justify a stopover.
