Why Plitvice Lakes works

Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia's oldest and largest national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, protects sixteen interconnected lakes that step down through a limestone canyon in a series of travertine barriers formed continuously by moss, algae and mineral deposits — a living geological process that keeps reshaping the waterfalls' shapes even today. Wooden boardwalks and footbridges, built directly over and alongside the water, let visitors walk within metres of cascades without ever needing a boat, though electric boats do cross the largest lake, Kozjak, saving a long walk between the upper and lower lake systems. The water's striking turquoise, emerald and grey-blue hues shift with mineral content, algae and the angle of sunlight, making the same viewpoint look markedly different from morning to afternoon. Dense beech and fir forest surrounds the lakes, sheltering wolves, brown bears and lynx, though these remain rarely seen given the volume of daytime foot traffic; birdwatchers have recorded over 160 species within the park. The park is at its most dramatic in autumn, when the surrounding forest turns gold and red against the blue-green water, and in spring, when snowmelt swells the waterfalls to their fullest force. Winter transforms the cascades into partially frozen sculptures, though some trails close seasonally. A single day is sufficient for the main loop, but the park rewards an early start to beat tour-bus crowds arriving from Zagreb and the coast.
