Okavango Delta

A river that never reaches the sea instead fans into the Kalahari, flooding a maze of lagoons and papyrus channels that draw elephant, hippo and lion to its islands -- explored by silent, poled mokoro canoe as much as by vehicle.

Why Okavango Delta works

The Okavango Delta is one of the world's few great inland deltas: the Okavango River, rising in Angola's highlands, spreads across the flat Kalahari sands of northern Botswana and simply disappears into evaporation and transpiration rather than reaching any ocean, flooding an ever-shifting maze of lagoons, palm-studded islands and papyrus channels each year between roughly May and September. This annual flood pulse concentrates extraordinary wildlife densities onto the delta's drier islands -- elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard and rare species like sitatunga and red lechwe -- while the channels themselves teem with hippo and crocodile. The delta is explored two ways: traditional game-drive vehicles cover ground on the larger islands, while the mokoro, a dugout canoe poled silently through the shallows by a local guide, gets visitors eye-level with kingfishers, painted reed frogs and grazing lechwe in near-total silence, a completely different register of safari. Because much of the delta is a UNESCO World Heritage wilderness with strictly limited camp numbers, most visits are fly-in, landing on small bush airstrips beside a handful of luxury tented camps rather than arriving by road. Combining a delta stay with nearby Moremi Game Reserve or Chief's Island rounds out a circuit that ranks among Africa's most exclusive and rewarding safari experiences.
