Why Ohrid works

Ohrid holds the rare distinction of a dual UNESCO listing for both its cultural heritage and the natural significance of Lake Ohrid, one of Europe's oldest and deepest lakes, home to species found nowhere else on Earth after more than two million years of continuous existence. The town's Old Bazaar climbs a hillside of Byzantine-era churches — local tradition holds Ohrid once had 365 churches, one for each day of the year, though far fewer survive intact today. The most photographed among them, St. John at Kaneo, sits alone on a clifftop promontory directly above the lake, its red-tiled dome and stone walls framed by water on three sides — the image has become the defining postcard of North Macedonia. Samuel's Fortress, ringing the top of the old town's hill, gives a full panorama over Ohrid's rooftops to the lake and the mountains of Albania across the water. The Church of St. Sophia, an 11th-century Byzantine cathedral, preserves fresco work considered among the finest surviving examples of medieval religious art in the Balkans. Beyond the town, boat trips run along the shoreline to Sveti Naum Monastery near the Albanian border, its peacock-filled courtyard and natural springs feeding directly into the lake, while the lake itself remains clear enough for swimming and diving straight from Ohrid's town beaches through summer.
