Nizwa

Oman's former capital and craft heartland, Nizwa centres on a colossal 17th-century circular fort and a Friday goat souq that has traded the same way for generations.

Why Nizwa works

Nizwa served as Oman's capital in the 6th and 7th centuries and remains its cultural and craft heart, anchored by Nizwa Fort — a massive circular tower begun in the 1650s, its walls once mined and booby-trapped against invaders, now climbable for views over the date palm oasis surrounding it. The adjoining souq trades in Omani silver khanjar daggers, hand-forged copperware and pottery from nearby Bahla, while the famous Friday livestock market brings Bedouin traders in from surrounding villages to bargain over goats and cattle in a ritual largely unchanged for decades. Nizwa's halwa, a sticky date-and-saffron sweet cooked in copper vats over open fires, is considered among Oman's finest, sold fresh from stalls near the fort. The city sits at the gateway to the Hajar Mountains, making it a natural base for day trips to Jebel Akhdar's rose terraces and Jebel Shams's canyon rim, both under an hour's drive away. Nizwa's mosque, with its turquoise-tiled minaret, is one of Oman's most photographed, though non-Muslims may only view it from outside. As a heritage base for exploring Oman's interior, Nizwa offers a more textured, working-town alternative to Muscat's coastal polish.
