Why Nassau works

Nassau grew up as a British colonial port on New Providence Island, and its pastel-pink government buildings — the House of Assembly and Parliament Square among them — still carry the shuttered, colonnaded look of an 18th-century Caribbean administrative centre, largely unchanged even as cruise ships now dock within walking distance several times a week. Bay Street's straw market has traded handwoven baskets, hats, and souvenirs for generations, its stalls run largely by Bahamian vendors continuing a craft tradition dating to enslaved and free Black artisans of the colonial era. A short bridge across the harbour reaches Paradise Island, dominated by the Atlantis resort's distinctive pink twin towers and its sprawling marine habitat and water park, a landmark visible from much of Nassau's waterfront even for visitors not staying there. Fort Fincastle and the Queen's Staircase — 65 steps hand-carved from limestone by enslaved labourers in the 1790s — sit within walking distance of downtown, offering harbour views and a more sobering counterpoint to the resort-driven waterfront. Nassau's harbour itself stays busy with a rotating cast of cruise ships, sport-fishing charters, and the occasional superyacht, while nearby Junkanoo Beach offers a livelier, bar-lined stretch of sand within the city rather than a resort compound. The John Watling's Distillery, housed in an 18th-century plantation building, gives a shorter, more local counterpoint to the island's resort-driven reputation, producing rum on-site from Bahamian sugar cane. Nassau works well as a day-tripper's city or a short stopover before island-hopping further into the Out Islands' quieter cays.
