Why Budva works
Budva is one of the Adriatic's oldest settlements, with a walled Old Town that has survived Greek, Roman, Venetian, and Austro-Hungarian rule across two and a half millennia. Its citadel, built on a rocky promontory, gives a full sweep over the old town's red rooftops, the harbour, and the long curve of Mogren and Slovenska Beaches on either side. Inside the walls, narrow marble streets hold small Orthodox and Catholic churches side by side, along with the Modern Art Gallery and a scattering of cafes tucked into old stone courtyards. Budva's beaches are the main draw for most visitors — Mogren, split into two coves by a rocky headland, is a short walk from the Old Town, while the resort strip along Slovenska Beach fills with sun loungers and beach bars through summer. A short drive south, the postcard islet of Sveti Stefan — a former fishing village turned luxury resort connected to the mainland by a narrow sandbar — is one of the most photographed views on the Montenegrin coast, best seen from the Villa Miločer beach nearby at sunset. Budva's nightlife, concentrated along the marina and Old Town's edge, makes it the liveliest base on the Budva Riviera.
