Melbourne

Laneway cafes, world-class sport and a tram network older than most of its buildings — Melbourne trades Sydney's harbour glamour for a more layered, arts-and-coffee culture that consistently tops liveable-city rankings.

Why Melbourne works

Melbourne's laneways — narrow service alleys once used for deliveries — have been reinvented since the 1990s into a dense network of hidden cafes, bars and street art, Hosier Lane chief among them, its ever-changing graffiti murals repainted almost daily by local and touring artists. The city's coffee culture, shaped heavily by post-war Italian and Greek immigration, is fiercely proud and genuinely excellent, with flat whites arguably invented in Melbourne cafes before spreading globally. Flinders Street Station's yellow Edwardian facade and clock-faced entrance has served as Melbourne's default meeting point for over a century, sitting opposite Federation Square's angular, deconstructivist architecture, itself a hub for public events and free exhibitions. The Melbourne Cricket Ground, holding over 100,000 spectators, anchors the city's deep sporting culture, hosting the Boxing Day Test and the Australian Football League Grand Final, a spectacle that effectively closes the city each September. The Royal Botanic Gardens and the Shrine of Remembrance, a First World War memorial visible down a long tree-lined avenue from the city centre, offer green respite, while the free City Circle tram loops the central grid past Victorian-era architecture largely spared the high-rise redevelopment seen elsewhere. St Kilda's beachfront, Luna Park's century-old fairground entrance and the Queen Victoria Market's produce stalls round out a city that rewards wandering its side streets as much as its headline sights.
