Why Medellin works
Medellin's transformation from the world's most dangerous city in the early 1990s to 'Innovative City of the Year' two decades later is told through its public transport as much as its museums. The Metrocable, a network of cable cars built to connect hillside comunas once cut off by geography and violence, now doubles as a scenic ride over red-brick barrios climbing the Aburra Valley's slopes toward Parque Arvi's cloud forest. Downtown, Plaza Botero displays 23 bronze sculptures donated by native son Fernando Botero, his signature voluptuous figures scattered among the colonial architecture of Plaza Mayor. El Poblado's leafy streets hold the city's best restaurants and rooftop bars, a world away from Comuna 13, where guided graffiti tours now walk through outdoor escalators and street art documenting the neighbourhood's own recovery. The city's 'eternal spring' climate — a near-constant 22°C thanks to its 1,500-metre elevation — makes outdoor cafes and parks usable year-round, and the Jardin Botanico's orchid house and butterfly enclosure offer an easy escape from the urban grid. Nearby Guatape, an hour's drive away, adds a striking day trip: a 220-metre granite rock (El Penol) climbable by internal staircase for views over a reservoir dotted with islands, next to a town whose building facades are painted with colourful relief friezes. Medellin rewards visitors willing to look past outdated headlines at a genuinely reinvented city.
