Destination Guide

Why Manama works

Manama packs an outsized range of experiences into one of the Gulf's smallest capitals, easily covered on foot or by short taxi hops. The Bahrain National Museum, along the northern waterfront, presents one of the region's best-curated introductions to Gulf history, from Dilmun-era burial mounds through the pearling economy, in a building whose scale and design rival much larger institutions. Manama Souq's covered lanes trade gold, spices and traditional textiles, with Bab Al Bahrain — the historic gateway building — marking the entrance to the old commercial quarter. The Bahrain World Trade Center, twin sail-shaped towers fitted with wind turbines between them, was among the first buildings globally to integrate large-scale wind power into its structure, and remains a defining piece of the skyline alongside the Bahrain Financial Harbour. Al Fateh Grand Mosque, one of the largest in the region, welcomes non-Muslim visitors with guided tours explaining Islamic architecture and practice. Adliya's Block 338 has become Manama's dining and nightlife quarter, with a notably liberal atmosphere by Gulf standards, including licensed restaurants and bars. Manama's causeway connection to Saudi Arabia makes it a popular weekend destination for Saudi visitors, giving the city's social scene a distinct, more relaxed energy than its neighbours.
