Gozo

Malta's quieter sister island trades city bustle for terraced farmland, salt pans, and dramatic limestone coastline. Ta' Pinu's basilica and the Citadel of Victoria anchor a slower, greener pace of travel.

Why Gozo works

Gozo is smaller, greener, and noticeably slower than Malta's main island, its patchwork of terraced fields and rubble walls giving it a rural character that has changed little in generations. The Basilica of Ta' Pinu, rising alone from farmland near Għarb, is Gozo's most important pilgrimage site — an early-20th-century church built around a much older chapel where a local woman reported a vision of the Virgin Mary in 1883, and now drawing visitors as much for its striking countryside setting as its religious significance. Victoria (Rabat), Gozo's capital, is crowned by the Citadel, a fortified hilltop old town with cathedral and bastion walls giving a 360-degree view over the island's low hills to the sea on every side. The coastline delivers Gozo's most dramatic scenery: Dwejra, once home to the Azure Window before its collapse in 2017, still holds the Inland Sea, a lagoon connected to open water by a tunnel through the rock, and Wied il-Mielaħ arch nearby offers a quieter, less-visited alternative. Mgarr harbour, where ferries arrive from Malta, is framed by a hillside church and a scattering of fishing boats. Gozo's salt pans at Marsalforn, hand-harvested since Roman times, still produce sea salt sold at roadside stalls each summer.
