Why Langkawi works

Langkawi's duty-free status, granted to encourage tourism to this once-quiet fishing archipelago, has made it a popular stop for both shopping and straightforward beach relaxation, with Pantai Cenang emerging as the main tourist strip of beachfront bars, restaurants, and water-sports operators along a wide stretch of golden sand. The Langkawi Sky Cab climbs steeply to Gunung Mat Cincang's upper station, where the Sky Bridge — a curved pedestrian bridge suspended 700 metres above sea level — offers views across the archipelago's forested islands and, on a clear day, toward southern Thailand. Underground, the Gua Kelawar (Bat Cave) and Kilim Karst Geoforest Park's mangrove boat tours reveal a different side of the island's limestone geology, with eagle-feeding stops that draw the brahminy kites the island is named for (Langkawi translates roughly to Reddish-Brown Eagle). Pulau Payar Marine Park, a short boat ride south, offers snorkelling among a protected coral reef with a resident population of blacktip reef sharks in the shallows. The island's legend of Mahsuri, a local princess wrongly executed for adultery whose dying curse was said to bring seven generations of misfortune to Langkawi, is retold at a preserved tomb site and remains part of local folklore even as the island has become one of Malaysia's most visited beach destinations.
