Why Vianden works

Vianden Castle rises directly above its namesake town, a 9th-to-14th-century fortress that counts among the largest feudal residences in Europe west of the Rhine — and one of the most completely restored, after Victor Hugo, who lived in exile nearby, campaigned for its preservation in the 19th century when it had fallen into ruin. Inside, restored halls, a knights' hall with reconstructed armoury, and Romanesque and Gothic architectural details spanning several centuries of expansion give a fuller sense of medieval castle life than most European ruins can. The town below, set along the Our River near the German border, is best appreciated from a chairlift that climbs the opposite hillside, giving the classic view: grey turrets and round towers rising above a tight cluster of slate-roofed houses, with the forested Ardennes hills rolling out behind. The Victor Hugo House, where the writer stayed during his exile, is now a small museum dedicated to his time in the town. A short walk along the Our leads to the Vianden dam and reservoir, part of one of Europe's oldest pumped-storage hydroelectric plants, set in dense forest that turns brilliant gold and red each autumn. The town's medieval bridge and covered market hall complete a compact, easily walkable historic centre.
