Lisbon

Built across seven hills above the Tagus, Lisbon rides antique yellow trams past pastel townhouses to miradouros with sweeping river views — a capital that feels unhurried, sun-bleached, and full of pasteis de nata.

Why Lisbon works

Lisbon's Alfama district, the oldest surviving neighbourhood after the devastating 1755 earthquake spared it, remains a maze of narrow lanes climbing toward the Moorish-built Sao Jorge Castle, its ramparts offering the city's best panoramic view over terracotta rooftops to the Tagus River. Tram 28, a century-old yellow funicular tram, rattles through the steepest of these streets, passing under laundry lines and past fado bars where the melancholic Portuguese musical tradition — a UNESCO-recognised art form — is performed nightly over dinner. Belem, west along the river, holds the Jeronimos Monastery, a UNESCO-listed masterpiece of Manueline architecture funded by Vasco da Gama's spice-trade riches, and the Belem Tower, a fortified lighthouse marking the point from which Portuguese explorers once departed. Nearby, Pasteis de Belem has served the original custard tart recipe, guarded since 1837, to queues that stretch out the door. The city's numerous miradouros (viewpoints) — Santa Luzia, Graca and Senhora do Monte among them — offer free, tile-framed vantage points over the hills, best visited at sunset with a bottle of vinho verde. Praca do Comercio, a grand riverside square rebuilt after the earthquake, and the Bairro Alto's nightlife district, quiet by day and packed with bars after dark, round out a city that rewards aimless wandering more than any checklist.
