Destination Guide

Why Lake Sevan works

Lake Sevan sits at over 1,900 metres in Armenia's central highlands, one of the largest freshwater lakes at this altitude anywhere in the world, and its scale — roughly five percent of Armenia's total land area — makes it a genuine inland sea rather than a mountain pond. Sevanavank Monastery, the lake's most-visited site, occupies a peninsula that was originally a separate island until Soviet-era irrigation projects lowered the water level by around twenty metres in the mid-20th century, connecting it permanently to the shore; its two 9th-century churches, built from black volcanic tuff, offer sweeping lake views from a short climb up stone steps. The lake's ecosystem supports the Sevan trout, an endemic species once so abundant it fed much of Soviet Armenia, though overfishing and the water-level changes have significantly reduced stocks in recent decades, making today's catch a genuinely prized regional delicacy. Around the shoreline, smaller villages and beaches draw Armenian holidaymakers each summer, when the lake's cold water offers relief from the highland heat, while the surrounding hills and the Selim Caravanserai — a well-preserved 14th-century Silk Road waystation on the pass above the lake — extend a Sevan visit into a fuller day trip. Winters at this altitude bring genuinely cold, often snow-bound conditions, making late spring through early autumn by far the better window for visiting.
